In August 1982, Dresser Industries—a Texas-based company with roots in oilfield equipment dating back to 1880—acquired IHC’s construction equipment business for a fraction of its asset value (reports vary around $100–150 million). This deal included plants in Libertyville, IL, and Candiac, Quebec, along with the Payloader and crawler lines.

Dresser, already involved in construction via brands like Galion, integrated the IHC lines under the Dresser name. This brought stability and access to new markets. In 1984, Dresser also acquired earthmoving assets from WABCO, further strengthening its portfolio.

A critical ongoing partnership was with Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) in Stalowa Wola, Poland. IHC had signed a licensing agreement with HSW in 1972, allowing production of crawler dozers, loaders, and pipelayers for Eastern European and Soviet markets. The first licensed TD-15C rolled out in 1973, followed by the impressive TD-40 (450 hp) in 1979—a joint Polish-American design. Dresser continued and expanded this cooperation after 1982.

Komatsu Dresser North America: A Strategic Joint Venture (1988–1994)

In 1988, Dresser and Japan’s Komatsu Ltd. formed a 50/50 joint venture: Komatsu Dresser Company. This aimed to combine Dresser’s North American presence and heritage lines with Komatsu’s advanced technology, manufacturing scale, and global ambitions. The JV produced construction and mining equipment, with operations centered in North America.

This partnership provided Dresser with resources during industry slumps while giving Komatsu a stronger foothold in the U.S. market. Machines often carried dual branding or rebadging (e.g., some Komatsu designs sold as Dresser). However, the construction equipment market faced recession in the early 1990s, leading to plant closures (including Libertyville in 1996) and restructuring.

In 1994, Komatsu bought out Dresser’s share, renaming the organization Komatsu America International Co. This marked the end of the formal Komatsu-Dresser JV in North America.

Birth of Dressta: Preserving the Heritage in Poland

While the North American side consolidated under Komatsu, the crawler dozer and related lines found a lasting home through HSW. In 1995, HSW and Komatsu America formed Dressta Co. Ltd.—a name blending “Dresser” and “Stalowa Wola.” This joint venture formalized production and global export of the IHC/Dresser-origin crawler equipment.

Key developments:

• 1999: The Dressta trademark and logo fully replaced Dresser.
• 2005: The Komatsu-HSW agreement expired. HSW became the 100% owner of Dressta Co. Ltd., making it the exclusive manufacturer and exporter of these machines worldwide.
• Production continued the robust, operator-focused designs known for durability in tough applications like mining, pipelaying, and heavy dozing.

In 2012, China’s Guangxi LiuGong Machinery acquired HSW’s construction equipment division and Dressta. It was renamed LiuGong Dressta Machinery Poland, injecting new resources while maintaining the brand’s identity and Polish manufacturing base.

Today, Dressta specializes in crawler dozers, pipelayers, and related equipment, emphasizing visibility, customization, and ruggedness—qualities directly traceable to the original IHC designs.
